Giovedì 27 marzo avremo il piacere di ospitare Jussi Parikka, che inaugurerà il Seminario con una lezione dal titolo Operations All the Way to the Bottom, or, Is There Life on Earth?

Harun Farocki’s notion of “operational images” is most often defined in somewhat a circular fashion: operational images operate, only secondarily they might represent things. This talk expands on operational images and proposes to consider the concept as part of a broader discussion on “operations” and “operative ontologies” (Siegert) of past years, thus focusing less on the “image” part and more on the conceptualization of operations also in respect to contemporary capitalism. While discussing some themes from the “Operational Images” book (2023), I will also give an insight to the book co-authored with Abelardo Gil-Fournier. In “Living Surfaces” (2024), we expand from operational images to operational surfaces as a central epistemic and aesthetic unit of planetary management. I am thus interested in how operational images – and the broader epistemic framework of operationality – can help to understand questions of visual culture and planetary change. I will echo Carl Sagan’s question from the early 1970s: is there life on earth? And at what resolution?
